From the altar-laden steps of the Porcelain Abbatoir, the intruders from Pale Echo venture back inside. They find the great Library of the Fleischguild and its doddering librarian, Shalinkramen. The old man, with wispy beard and copper mask, presides over a vaulted room of bloodwood shelves and blue and white tiled floors, dominated by a great mosaic of a brain, with inlaid blue tiles depicting nerves spreading out along the stacks.
Caenn checks out a book on the history of the guild, making a solemn commitment to return it. (Murder and the desecration of tombs is one thing, but overdue library books quite another.)
Moving on, the intruders slay a trio of acolytes in the act of burning an offering of thrice-folded animal fat in an ornate furnace. They find a kitchen where the chef trades them fine sausages for the leg of the Weaver of Shadows, salivating over the culinary delights he can conjure from its daemonic marrow. They interrupt the slaughter of a great turtle, and Garviel collects the shell.
The third sacrifice they come upon causes them to keep their blades sheathed: Ulimamamo has returned from the White Jungle with a fearsome hornet, and turned it over to the Fleischguild to be offered up in a public ritual with hundreds in attendance. Fortunately for the party, the Explorer spots them and wryly directs them back to the catacombs before they can be caught and, presumably, join the hornet upon the altar.
Once again below, they resume evading traps and breaking open sarcophagai - this time containing freakish distortions of nature, living organs preserved in honey, and for some reason, mummified cats - and Aeris finds two pearl-handled throwing knives. They face the terrible Fleischgeist, of which I will not speak here, and return to Rastingdrung via the Sewer River and Ultan’s Door.
He will return that book.
